The presentation of the Implementation Plan for the “Safe Village” and “Safe People” programs and the anticipation of the device for rural fires, through a dedicated combat team at the firefighters of Portimão, were the big news of the 3rd anniversary of the Municipal Protection Center Civil and Relief Operations of Portimão, which took place on the 26th.
It was a working day that involved all Civil Protection agents and cooperating entities in Portimão, with the Regional Operational Coordination Center also meeting, the body that carries out institutional coordination from an operational point of view, namely the planning and management of the participation of the means and resources of each force or service due to a serious accident or catastrophe.
In the presentation of the “Aldeia Segura” and “Pessoas Seguras” programs in the municipality of Portimão, the Forestry Technical Office reviewed the status of the exceptional municipal action plan for the defense of the forest against fire, in progress since the beginning of the year . This plan ensures the materialization of the exceptional regime provided for in the State Budget Law for 2018, namely with regard to fuel management and population awareness.
The implementation plan for the two programs includes seven priority locations depending on the danger, risk and history of occurrences in the municipality.
Thus, and following the planning already carried out with the Parish Councils, concrete actions will be carried out as a matter of priority during the month of May in Montes de Cima, Vale Juncal, Senhora do Verde, Monte Canelas, Porto de Lagos, Rasmalho and Aaron.
In parallel, work will be carried out associated with isolated dwellings that are not a cluster.
Another novelty was the announcement that the Municipality of Portimão anticipates the device for rural fires, constituting, for this purpose, a dedicated firefighting team of local Firefighters.
This "unprecedented" Rural Fire Fighting Team will ensure that, "outside the periods of reinforcement of the Special Device for Fighting Rural Fires of the National Civil Protection Authority, a prompt and deadly initial attack is guaranteed through a dedicated unit, without compromise the other areas of protection and relief».
On the other hand, through a protocol signed between the City Council and the Humanitarian Association of Voluntary Firefighters, which maintains the Fire Department of Portimo, signed on March 9th, in the amount of nearly 77 thousand euros, «a guarantee is guaranteed. reinforcement of the municipal system with the inclusion of a Team for Recognition and Assessment of the Situation and a Team for Fighting Rural Fires, in a total of seven dedicated firefighters” and who will be “available even outside periods usually more favorable to the occurrence of fires”.
This measure, considers the Municipal Center for Civil Protection and Relief Operations of Portimão, is justified due to the «recurrence of fires in rural areas outside the most critical periods and which usually deserve the greatest reinforcement of resources in this area».
Until now, these fires "were quelled using the Minimum Intervention Force of the Fire Brigade of Portimão, which must be available for other types of occurrences, so moving these means to more remote areas of the county could compromise the speed of response to situations that occur in the urban perimeter, which asserts itself more and more, throughout the year, as an international tourist destination».
"Nobody chooses a place to spend their holidays that is not effectively safe, and this initiative by the municipality reinforces this fundamental position, allowing greater coverage of existing risks", explains the Portimão City Council, in a note sent to the newsrooms.
The 77 thousand euros of the protocol "are intended in its entirety for payment to firefighters who integrate this special device", adds the municipality.
«This team will be pre-positioned, whenever justified and at any time of the year, in the Senhora do Verde Detachment, in order to anticipate possible interventions in the most vulnerable areas in the north of the municipality».
