The Museum of Portimão will celebrate its 10th anniversary throughout the month of May, with a program that includes activities for families, new exhibitions, music, dance, a new edition of the photographic race and several surprises. The highlight of the celebrations takes place on the 19th of May, but the party lasts the entire month.

On May 5th, the Portimão Museum will show a film about the legends of the Algarve, made by participants of the Easter Holidays. On the 6th, the Museum's Educational Workshop will challenge you to build finger puppets, of the Moorish King and Princess Gilda.

The party continues on May 17th, at 18 pm, with the launch of the 00nd edition of the book “Letters by Manuel Teixeira Gomes to João de Barros”, a joint initiative of the Municipalities of Portimão and Figueira da Foz, which will feature a presentation Professor Guilherme d'Oliveira Martins.

On the following day, May 18, the museum in Portimo will celebrate the International Day of Museums with free admission.

Visitors will be able to experience, first-hand, an application that will be presented on May 19, the anniversary of this cultural space, which aims to expand the museum's “hyperconnection”.

This day's program also has a strong technological component. Visitors will be 'invited to grab their phone and download the new app from the museum or putting on the augmented reality glasses to live a digital experience with Multimedia Guides».

«This new support is a tool for everyone, with an inclusive character, which will allow visitors with special needs to discover the museum's reference exhibition in an interactive way», according to the Câmara de Portimão.

It will also be on this day that the 18th Portimão Photographic Race, which this year will also have a night sport. The initiative starts at 9 am and lasts until 00 pm, with participants having to pass through the different checkpoints to receive an indication of the 23 (day race) or 00 subjects (night race) to photograph.

At 16 pm on the 00th, the exhibition “People from the land and from the sea” opens, an exhibition that will occupy the two temporary exhibition rooms and «allow a look at the duality of realities that have always been present in the evolution of Portimão».

On the one hand, activities linked to land will be represented and, on the other, artisanal and industrial fishing, «with the square and the market being the highlights, where both are found».

The party continues with the breaking of the cake on the 10th anniversary, accompanied by the sound of the accordion, next to the fish transporter, outside the museum. On this occasion, they will be given to taste different delicacies accompanied by a selection of regional wines.

The 10th anniversary celebrations continue from 21 pm. The façade of the former factory which is now a museum «will gain new life through a magnificent spectacle of light and color and the contemporary dance performance entitled “Petingas em rede” by Dancenema».

Guests will be challenged to "enter the museum, flashlight in hand, to discover the other side of this space, to the sound of guitars from the Conservatório de Música de Portimão". With this initiative, the cultural space from Portimão takes the opportunity to join the “European Night of Museums”, which is celebrated on this date.

On May 26, at 17 pm, two exhibitions will be inaugurated. At the hall The set of works “Treasures of the Sea”, by the artist Vera Christians, “which reflect aspects of marine life” will be on display. Outside the museum, the exhibition of images “Rio Arade – A tide full of stories” will be exhibited, «which aims to show the evolution of economic, sporting and cultural activities related to the river Arade and its banks».

Inaugurated in 2008, the Portimão Museum received that year an honorable mention in the category “Best Portuguese Museum”, by the Portuguese Association of Museology, and the following year by Turismo de Portugal, in the category “New Public Event”.

In 2010, he was internationally distinguished with the “Council of Europe Museum” award, and the following year, with the “DASA – World of Work 2011” award.

Also that year, he was awarded for the film “À conversa com Manuel Teixeira Gomes”, at the Festival Tour Film Brazil 2011, held in Florianópolis (Brazil), with the “Arara de Prata – Young Talents”.

In 2015, he was once again distinguished by the Portuguese Association of Museology, with the “Innovation and Creativity” prize, for the project “Our culture goes out to the street”.

«With the conversion of the old canning factory into a “factory of stories”, the Museum of Portimão appears as a place specifically dedicated to the study and promotion of the cultural and social identity of the Portimonense Community, the evolution and uniqueness of its historical trajectory and for the provision of a set of services, open to all citizens, for their training, enjoyment and initiative», describes the City Council of Portimão.
