Manuel Alegre will participate in a meeting with readers next Saturday, April 14, at 15 pm, at the José Mariano Gago Municipal Library, in Olhão.

In April, the writer will be featured in the Library. Manuel Alegre was born in 1936, in Águeda. He studied in Lisbon, Porto and Coimbra.

In 1961, he was mobilized to Angola. Imprisoned by PIDE, he spent six months in the Fortaleza de São Paulo, in Luanda, where he wrote most of the poems for his first book “Praça da song”.

After a spell in Algiers, he returned to Portugal after the 25th of April 1974. Historical leader of the Socialist Party since that year, he was vice-president of the Assembly of the Republic and member of the Council of State.

«His vast literary work, which includes the novel, the short story, the essay, but above all poetry, has been widely disseminated and acclaimed», says Câmara de Olhão.

He was awarded the most distinguished literary prizes: Grand Prize for Poetry by APE-CTT, Prize for Literary Criticism by AICL, Fernando Namora Prize, Pessoa Prize, Dom Dinis Prize, Literary Life Prize of the Portuguese Writers Association, Prize for the Consecration of Career of the Portuguese Society of Authors and, in 2017, the Camões Award.

Manuel Alegre's most recent book “Auto de António”, from 2017, focuses on Dom António Prior do Crato, the last Prince of Avis, a hero in the history of Portugal who has always fascinated the author.
