Francisco George, former director general of Health and current president of the Portuguese Red Cross, Ana Grenha, researcher at the University of Algarve in the area of ​​pharmaceutical sciences, and Paulo Girão, professor of history at the Monchique Schools Group, are the speakers at the conference on Pneumonics and Investigation, scheduled for April 13, at 14:30 pm, in the auditorium of the Faro of the University Hospital Center of the Algarve. Admission is free.

The session, which will be moderated by Ana Cristina Guerreiro, director of the Department of Public Health and Planning at ARS Algarve, is aimed at health professionals, students and the community in general.

Ana Grenha, researcher at the Center for Marine Sciences (CCMar) and Center for Biomedical Research (CBMR) of the University of Algarve, will discuss her experience in the area of ​​research and drug administration strategies in the treatment of lung diseases.

Paulo Girão, author of the Master's thesis in Regional and Local History «The Pneumonic Flu in the Algarve: 1918», will outline a historical context of this period in the region.

«Pneumonics – flu pandemics» is the theme of the communication by Francisco George, who, within the scope of his vast professional experience linked to Public Health, will address this issue in a comprehensive manner.

This initiative marks the beginning of Cycle of Health and Culture Conferences evocative of the centenary of three landmark events of 1918, Pneumonic or Spanish Flu, the inauguration of the Sanatorium Carlos Vasconcelos Porto in São Brás de Alportel and the end of the 1st World War, promoted by the Regional Directorate of Culture of the Algarve, in partnership with the Regional Health Administration of the Algarve, the University of Algarve and the Municipality of São Brás de Alportel.

The various conferences, promoted by each of the entities between the months of April and November, will have as their motto a historical and cultural contextualization of the period, associated with an approach to similar phenomena existing today.

This first conference is organized by the Algarve Regional Health Administration, with the support of the University Hospital Center of the Algarve (CHUA).

O Conference Cycle it has the support of CHUA, the Institute of Hygiene and Tropical Medicine of the Universidade Nova de Lisboa, the Trains of Portugal, the Museu do Trajo de São Brás de Alportel, the Southern Regional Section of the Order of Architects and the Sub-Region of Faro of the Medical Association.
