“I am extremely happy and honored by this honor”, said Carlos do Carmo when the Lagoa Council invited him to name the city's Municipal Auditorium.

The main cultural facility of the Municipality of Lagoa will thus adopt the name of the fado singer Carlos do Carmo, the greatest name in Portuguese music and culture, in a unique and unprecedented tribute at national level, which will take place on April 28, at 17:00.

On that same day, but at 21 pm, Camané, Cristina Banco, Marco Rodrigues and Paulo de Carvalho, among other names in Portuguese music, will give voice to a moment that will revisit songs immortalized in the voice of Carlos do Carmo throughout his more than 30 years of career.

“We addressed this request to Carlos do Carmo on the 20th of January, after his performance at the Arade Congress Center, and his response was immediate, which made us very happy”, revealed the mayor Francisco Martins.

The mayor pointed out Lagoa's strategic vision in the cultural area, stressing that this is a work that “aims to recognize, show and value the material and immaterial heritage, giving primary importance to the education and training of audiences”.

Carlos do Carmo's journey inside and outside the country and the way his work relates to the identity of the Portuguese people were some of the reasons that led the municipality to choose his name. Since his first record record: “Fado Loucura”, in 1963, his voice has been recorded on more than 80 individual records, co-participations and compilations.

He was distinguished in 1997 with the degree of Commander of the Order of Infante D. Henrique by President Jorge Sampaio and, in 2006, with the Order of Merit by the current president, Marcelo Rebelo de Sousa. In 1998, he won a “Globo de Ouro” award for Excellence and Merit and in 2002 he won the Globe for Best Album of the Year, awarded by SIC, for his work: “Nove fados and a song of love”. In 2008, after participating in the film “Fados”, by Spanish director Carlos Saura, he saw his “Fado da Saudade” awarded the Goya Prize.

The municipality of Lisbon awarded him the city's Medal of Merit on two occasions, the last after winning the Latino Grammy for Career, which was awarded to him in Las Vegas, an unprecedented distinction for a Portuguese artist.
