Last week, Loulé City Council presented, at the Main Hall of Paços do Concelho, the first phase of the work of the Municipal Contingency Plan for the Dry Periods.

The preparation and implementation of this plan is one of the 28 adaptation options that are part of the Municipal Climate Change Adaptation Strategy (EMAAC de Loulé).

This is a strategic instrument through which the municipality intends to promote, throughout the municipal territory, “a coherent response to the multiple issues related to climate change”.

According to the Câmara de Loulé, «the presentation of the methodology for developing the plan was done jointly with Simbiente, a company with recognized skills and experience in the matter».

«This moment was attended by approximately 40 people, including municipal leaders and technicians and representatives of various local and regional entities, whose involvement and active participation will be preponderant in the work to be developed».

Vítor Aleixo, mayor of Loulé, highlighted the «importance of developing this plan, both at the present time, in which the country, despite the rain of recent days, still has a large part of its territory in severe or moderate drought, as for the future, in which climate projections for the end of the century point to the occurrence of progressively more frequent and intense droughts».

In this context, the development of the Municipal Contingency Plan aims to increase the Municipality's capacity to respond to periods of drought, «ensuring a more effective and adequate solution, as well as minimizing the risks and damage caused by the different types of drought at all levels and sectors, and ensure the preventive management of associated resources”.
