The Algarve's hospitals will have 30 of the 700 vacancies in the national competition launched by the Government for the recruitment of newly-specialized doctors. If all the places are occupied, «some of the main constraints felt over the years in various specialties will be resolved», assured the University Hospital Center of the Algarve.

The specialty in which more places will be made available is Anesthesiology, for which six vacancies were opened. This is followed by General Surgery and Internal Medicine, with five places each, and Orthopedics, with four.
Pathological Anatomy, Plastic, Reconstructive and Aesthetic Surgery, Endocrinology and Nutrition, Stomatology, Gynecology/Obstetrics, Clinical Hematology, Neurosurgery, Medical Oncology, Pediatrics and Psychiatry are the other specialties covered, each with a vacancy.

More than just opening vacancies, highlighted the CHUA, «this competition also guarantees positive discrimination for the University Hospital Center of the Algarve, attributing, in the national context of hospitals, the largest number of vacancies in needy specialties, such as Anesthesiology, General Surgery, Internal Medicine and Orthopedics».

«We are very pleased with the allocation, at national level, of this number of places for the University Hospital Center of the Algarve, as they represent the recognition of the Algarve's specificity, which guarantees health care to the population of an entire region that is more than 300 kilometers from the reference hospitals», underlines the chairman of the Board of Directors of the Algarve hospitals, Ana Paula Gonçalves.

«This competition represents an excellent opportunity to attract and retain new specialist doctors in Algarve hospitals who, currently, and due to the fact that they are part of a University Hospital Centre, have the opportunity to pursue a career in the health area, in a region with enormous potential for differentiation , as well as in the technical-scientific field, through the recent connection with the academic world and health science, established through the consortium created between the University Hospital Center of the Algarve and the University of Algarve», concluded the CHUA.
