The Association for the Defense of Heritage of Mértola (ADPM) presented the project “Raízes” – Local Networks for Sustainable and Inclusive Tourism on 20 March, in Porto Novo, Santo Antão (Cape Verde). 

 

The project, funded by the European Union, began in September 2017 and will last for three years, with the general objective of promoting sustainable tourism as a factor in generating income and improving socioeconomic conditions on the island of Santo Antão.

The specific objective of the project is to diversify and qualify the tourism offer based on heritage and on the training of civil society organizations on the island of Santo Antão.

The main activities planned include the creation of an action plan for sustainable tourism, the definition of a regulation for the creation of a destination management organization; the creation of interpretation centres, the definition and signage of tourist routes, the production of a paper ecotourism guide and an application for mobile devices.

All these activities will be accompanied by training actions for associations, entrepreneurs, artisans and tourism professionals, including the creation of a doctorate in tourism, as well as environmental awareness activities.

The public session was attended by the Head of Cooperation of the European Union Jose Roman Leon Lora, the Secretary of State for Education Amadeu Cruz and the mayors. The presentation session was followed by a grog d'honra served at the headquarters of the “Raízes” project, in the former premises of the Municipality of Porto Novo.

The “Raízes” project promoted by ADPM, in partnership with the associations ADIRP, Dragoeiro, Municipal Councils of Paul and Porto Novo, and the Higher Institute of Economic and Business Sciences, also having as associated partners the National Center for Craftsmanship of Cape Verde, Instituto of Employment and Vocational Training, Ministry of Agriculture and Environment of Cape Verde, Protected Areas of Santo Antão, Ministry of Economy of Cape Verde and University of Algarve.
