A 27-year-old Saudi parachutist was seriously injured this afternoon at the Portimão Aerodrome when, at the moment of landing, he crashed into a meteorological station.

Richard Marques, commander of the Fire Department of Portimão, told the Sul Informação that the man was transported to the Hospital of Portimão.

According to the Civil Protection, the alert was given at 13:54 pm.

The Fire Department of Portimão was involved in the relief operations, with 10 operational personnel and four vehicles, and the GNR was also called to the scene.

Next weekend, February 10th and 11th, the skies of Portimão will once again “color” with parachutists, as the Municipal Aerodrome will host the 13th Freefly Championship, an official event of the Portuguese Federation of Skydiving. Freefly is considered the most extreme form of skydiving.

This event, organized by the Portuguese Federation of Parachuting, through Skydive Algarve, brings together around 20 Portuguese parachutists who are aficionados of this sport and «promises a lot of adrenaline in the skies», according to the Câmara de Portimão.

Neitherthis time of year, many parachutists, mostly foreigners, take advantage of the good Algarve weather to practice the sport in winter.
