More than a thousand people participated this afternoon in the funeral ceremonies of Carlos Silva e Sousa, mayor of Albufeira, who died Thursday night, aged 60, from a massive heart attack.

The body was in a burning chamber in the Church of Sant'Ana from yesterday to late afternoon, and today, at 14:30 pm, it was carried on shoulders by the firemen to the Igreja Matriz, where the funeral mass took place.

The ceremonies were attended by almost all the mayors of the Algarve, as well as other mayors from across the region, the Minister of Internal Affairs Eduardo Cabrita, three Secretaries of State – Carlos Martins, Environment, Miguel Freitas, Forests and Regional Development, and also Ana Mendes Godinho, from Tourism -, deputies and leaders of political parties, regional directors of State bodies, businessmen and leaders of business associations, cultural figures such as writer Lídia Jorge and her husband, journalist Carlos Albino, members from cultural and sporting associations, scouts, representatives of the Misericórdias, members of the Confraternity, many City officials from all sectors, many friends and family, as well as many anonymous people.

The President of the Republic was also present, not least because he was a personal friend of the late mayor of Albufeira. But Marcelo Rebelo de Sousa entered through a side door of the church and came out through it again, faking so were the many journalists who covered the funeral news.

After mass, the funeral procession, made up of dozens of cars, continued along Avenida dos Descobrimentos towards Albufeira Town Hall, then again along that avenue, passing by Rotunda das Minhocas towards the Hospital Privado Lusíadas (the old lane of aviation).

The procession also passed by the RCI and ended at Cemitério Novo, in Vale Pedras, where Carlos Eduardo da Silva e Sousa was buried.
