This Saturday, March 3rd, the Vila Real de Santo António Tuna Confraternity will hold the V Chapter with the enthronement of new members, to take place from 16 pm onwards, at the António Aleixo Cultural Centre.

This initiative will bring together around 20 confraternities from all over the country.

Before the Chapter events, the initiative includes a reception at the local authority and two public moments of importance for the institution: the inauguration of the Confraria's headquarters, on Rua Conselheiro Frederico Ramirez, at 15:30 pm, as well as a parade of confraternities invited through the streets of the Historic Center of VRSA, at 15:45 pm.

The procession will reveal the strong yellow and blue tones of the costumes of the Vilarreal brotherhood, colors that evoke the traditional uniforms of the workers of the many canning factories that existed in the city of Guadiana.

Joining this route are many confraternities from the North to the South of the country, namely from Espinho, Serra da Estrela, Vila Nova de Gaia and, of course, the Algarve.

Among the new members who will join the institution are the two groups of schools in Vila Real de Santo António, which will allow the promotion of the brotherhood among the school community and, consequently, among the youngest.

The Confraria do Atum's mission is to take the history of tuna and the canning industry further, episodes that marked generations in VRSA and are still present today in many of the city's typical dishes or in the eating habits of villagers.

One of the main objectives of the current direction of the Confraternity «is to extend its scope to the Eurocity of Guadiana, thus increasing cooperation between the border towns of Portugal and Spain», says the Chamber of Vila Real de Santo António.
