15 seahorses that were found in traps placed in the Ria Formosa, in the Olhão area, were returned to nature by the GNR's Coastal Control Unit (UCC).

The GNR military discovered illegal fishing gear during a patrol action. In addition to having saved the animals there, "a news report was prepared and the specimens, because they were alive, were returned to their natural habitat," according to the GNR's UCC.

This protected species “is highly sought after for sale, due to its use in traditional oriental medicine and for ornamental purposes”.
