The University of Algarve's Center for Marine and Environmental Research (CIMA) has purchased an autonomous underwater vehicle, which will be used to collect oceanographic variables on the Algarve coast, as part of the OCASO project.

CIMA, which is the only entity in the south of Portugal to operate this type of technology, «is, therefore, able to intervene in various types of other missions, both in the coastal area and in estuaries», the University of Algarve said.

This week, researchers Flávio Martins and João Janeiro traveled to the city of Porto to receive a three-day training course on the use of this type of equipment.

The OCASO project, financed by the Operational Program for Cooperation between Spain and Portugal, «it aims to establish a transboundary oceanographic observatory in the southern region, based on the existing monitoring network, to monitor and detect tsunamigenic activity and provide, on an ongoing basis, relevant information for all activities practiced in the area, relevant to the economy of both countries», explains the Algarve academy.
