This Monday, the bishop of the Algarve presided at a Mass on the first day of the year, at the Sanctuary of the Mother Sovereign, in Loulé, evoking the victims of the fires of June and October 2017.

«It is difficult, as we start this year and looking at the year that is ending, not to dwell on these terrible days with disastrous consequences for so many families and so many people», said D. Manuel Quintas, in an intervention published by the diocesan newspaper 'Folha do Sunday'.

The bishop of Algarve invited him to praise God "for all the solidarity that arose" following those events that he considered to be "a characteristic of the Portuguese people".

"It is also important to look to the future, asking the Lord to be different and that this solidarity does not have to supply what is the responsibility of everyone, particularly those who are responsible for more prevention than remedy," he added.
