This Tuesday, 162 newly trained doctors began their internship at the Centro Hospitalar Universitário do Algarve (CHUA). The interns, 42 with specific training and 120 from the Common Year, chose the Algarve hospitals to continue their training and start their careers.

According to CHUA, «Specific Training inmates were placed in the following specialties in the units of Faro and Portimão: Anesthesiology (2), Cardiology (1), General Surgery (3), Gastroenterology (1), Gynecology/Obstetrics (2), Physical and Rehabilitation Medicine (3), Intensive Medicine (2), Internal Medicine (9 ), Occupational Medicine (1), Nephrology (1), Medical Oncology (2), Clinical Pathology (2), Medical Pediatrics (2), Pulmonology (1), Psychiatry (6), Radiology (2), Rheumatology (1 ), Urology (1)'.

«The inmates of the Common Year, despite practicing a supervised medicine, were placed in different specialties in the hospital units of Faro and Portimão with the objective of having the opportunity to contact the different services in the two units and, in this way, deepen their knowledge in different clinical contexts», he added.

Hugo Nunes, member of the Board of Directors of CHUA, considered that the number of interns who chose to come to the Algarve «allows us to look to the future in a more optimistic way regarding the possibility of establishing these young doctors».

Paulo Morgado, president of the Algarve Regional Health Administration (ARS), «stressed the regional importance of welcoming these new interns who chose the Algarve to start their career in the area of ​​medicine or to complement their specific training. not only the capacity and training dynamics of public hospitals and primary care units in the Algarve in training young doctors, but also the strength of the synergies created with the university world and with the research component that now characterize the University Hospital Center of the Algarve».

In January 2018, 2.179 intern physicians of the common year and 1.758 intern physicians with specific training began their functions in the institutions of the National Health Service (SNS).
