Four students from the Pinheiro e Rosa Secondary School, from Faro, were distinguished with the communication award “For Cultural Diversity”, in the Youth category. Cátia Orvalho, Gonçalo Jacob, Luísa Lino and Rafael Pina were awarded for the book “Faces of Gumisses".

The book that won the distinction to young people from Faro «was inspired by the trip to a refugee camp in Greece within the scope of the Erasmus+ Project “In a Far Away Land Refugee Children”», revealed Pinheiro e Rosa.

The ceremony to announce the winners and award the prizes for this competition, promoted by the High Commission for Migration, took place last Monday, 18 December.

The award jury considered that the work of the students of the Farense school was that, among those presented to the Youth category, which best framed the spirit of the initiative, whose objective is to «reward works, published and/or disseminated in traditional and digital media , with a relevant contribution to the promotion of cultural diversity, the fight against discrimination based on nationality, ethnicity, religion or documental situation and, in particular, to the integration of migrant and gypsy communities present in Portugal».

«This competition had the participation of media/journalism professionals, content producers, screenwriters and/or screenwriters in the areas of information, programming, digital content, entertainment and/or national fiction for television, theater and cinema, and also young people aged between 15 and 24 years», according to secondary Pinheiro e Rosa.

The winner of the “Cultural Diversity” award, the main award of this competition, was the work “I came from afar, the new settlers of the Portuguese interior”, by Ricardo Jorge Rodrigues, published in Notícias Magazine.

“The generation of 'Portuguese immigrants' living in Portugal”, by Joana Gorjão Henriques, Público newspaper, won the Imprensa Escrita Award, a category that also included an Honorable Mention for work “500 years later, Os Habib are looking for a house in Portugal”, by Catarina Gomes, also published in Público newspaper.

“Jamaika is also Portugal”, by Rita Colaço, from Antena 1, won the Radio Award, and the report “Renegados”, by Sofia Pinto Coelho, Filipe Ferreira, Rui Berton, Isabel Cruz, José Dias and Diana Matias, from SIC, won the Television Award. In this category, two Honorable Mentions were awarded, one to the work “Ai, Mouraria”, by Mafalda Gameiro, from RTP and the other to the article “I am the President of the Board – Union of the parishes of Águeda and Borralha”, by Miriam Alves, Filipe Ferreira, Marco Carrasqueira, Sandra Cadeireiro and Patrícia Reis, from SIC.

The Photojournalism Award went to José Carlos Carvalho's “We Muslims”, a work published in Visão magazine, while the Regional and Local Information Organizations Award was given to the work “First non-Catholic church in Leiria celebrates a century of struggle against discrimination ”, by Carlos Manuel Ferreira dos Santos Almeida, published in the weekly Região de Leiria. The Diversity in Scripts Award went to the “Teaser Estoril Conferences 2017”, by Alexandre Borges.

In this edition of the “Pela Cultural Diversidade” communication prize, 32 works were submitted to competition, evaluated by a jury consisting of: Clara Almeida Santos, Vice-Dean for Culture and Communication at the University of Coimbra; Fernando Cascais, PhD Professor in Social Communication and Journalist; Lívio de Morais, Professor and Plastic Artist; and Pedro Santos Pereira, journalist.
