It will be «an unrepeatable moment», where Custódio Castelo will «deliver himself body and soul and touch what the soul feels» when watching the classic silent film “Mother”. The Portuguese musician will be tomorrow, December 7th, at Igreja De São Clemente, Matriz de Loulé, at 21 pm, as a special guest for another session of the Lucem video, and anticipated what this show will be, in an interview with Sul Informação.

This will be the second session of the cine-concert cycle that the Cineclube de Faro is promoting in churches in the region, in partnership with the Diocese of the Algarve and with the support of the “365Algarve” program. In these shows, renowned artists are invited to set to music classics from silent cinema.

Custódio Castelo accepted the challenge and will take it to the limit, with the help of his Portuguese guitar, in the accompaniment he will make to the work performed by Vsevolod Pudovkin in 1926, inspired by a work by Máximo Gorki.

“I'll be, minute by minute, emotionally living what I'm watching and receiving the energy of the audience that will be in the church. This will be, above all, a journey that will never be repeated. I'm not going to play pre-made music, I'm going to improvise on motives. I'll be looking at the screen and not the guitar», explained Custódio Castelo.

«The public can expect, as always, a Custódio Castelo as a whole, playing and creating in the moment. In this case, the inspiration is the film – and as you know, the word mother has an endless meaning of emotions and feelings – and I will travel through this immense world», added the musician.

Thus, Custódio Castelo will be in Loulé in different conditions, from the outset as an instrumentalist, but also as «someone who is living the same as the audience is living», and as a creator, «who will be interpreter, at the time, of the emotional moments of the movie".

"People who are present are invited to travel through my music, looking at the images that I'm also seeing and feeling at that moment," he stressed.

As can be seen, this will be a unique opportunity to see one of the greatest exponents of the Portuguese guitar in the creation process. “Even if I gave a concert under the same conditions the day after tomorrow, it wouldn't be the same, because our state of mind and soul is not the same under any circumstances,” he said.

And Custódio Castelo goes without a network, since, by option, he'll be watching the film, for the first time, tomorrow. «I prefer not to see, because if I do – and I've been tempted to see – I'll be losing whatever I'm feeling at the moment, on an emotional level. It will be the fact of seeing the film for the first time that will make me create in a spontaneous and exciting way», he said.

On stage, Custódio Castelo will be accompanied by some guests, namely the bassist Carlos Menezes and the Algarve's “Fad'NU”.

The Algarve team, which brings together José Alegre, former student of Custódio Castelo, and singer Cátia Alhandra, will star in “the only moment that will have a voice, during the film”. "The chosen poem is by Pedro Homem de Melo", he explained.

Admission to tomorrow's session, like the others in Video Lucem, is free.

Synopsis of the movie “Mother”:

The Mother is invariably placed with one of the most important films of all time, not just from the silent film era. Adapted from the homonymous literary work by Máximo Gorki, it tells the story of the workers' struggles to improve their living conditions, against inhuman and cruel bosses, and of a courageous mother who starts from the anguished protection of her son until she becomes the heroine of all the combatants.

Pudovkin was, along with Eisenstein, the most important theorist of cinematographic editing in those years when cinema was taking its first steps, and this film of his is an example of that same genius. With powerful interpretations, among which the unforgettable figure of Vera Baranovskaya in the role of mother stands out, it will feature the live creation of the brilliant Portuguese guitarist Custódio Castelo, accompanied by his guests, which will constitute a show of fabulous originality.
