VRSA hosts world games for wheelchair athletes and amputees

The 7th edition of the International Wheelchair & Amputee Sports Federation (IWAS) World Games, aimed at athletes in wheelchairs.

The 7th edition of the International Wheelchair & Amputee Sports Federation (IWAS) world games, aimed at wheelchair athletes and amputees, takes place from November 30th to December 6th, at the Sports Complex of Vila Real de Santo António. 

The competition, which takes place for the first time in Portugal, has about half a thousand participants (among athletes, coaches, managers and staff doctor) and will be played by athletes from the under-23 categories, open class e Master Class (for athletes over 40 years of age).

The opening ceremony will take place at Praça Marquês de Pombal, on December 1st, at 16 pm, with representation from nearly 00 participating countries being expected.

The program starts on December 1st and 2nd with training for all sports, with archery, table tennis and competition scheduled to take place. taekwondo for the 3rd and 4th of December. Between the 3rd and 5th of December, the athletics and swimming competitions will take place.

For Conceição Cabrita, Mayor of Vila Real de Santo António, «the holding of the event in the Algarve shows not only the region's capacity to host a type of inclusive tourism, but also the excellent conditions of the Municipal Sports Complex to host a competition high level".

“We are excited to host the Games, for the first time, in Vila Real de Santo António, and look forward to welcoming the athletes to Portugal”, notes, for his part, Paul de Pace, president of IWAS.

The official also explained that «the event has the full support of the Portuguese Federation of Sports for People with Disabilities (FPDD) and will have a greater variety of modalities compared to previous editions, offering an opportunity for new athletes to have their experience in these IWAS World Games».

During the tests, the IWAS General Assembly will also take place, which includes the internal elections for the leadership.

The choice of Vila Real de Santo António for this competition «is a sign of the recognition of the quality and work of promoting the VRSA Sports Complex, a structure that has attracted dozens of events of media interest», says the City Council.

The Sports Complex of VRSA was recently integrated by the Sports Foundation into the national network of High Performance Centers, and is dedicated to athletics, judo, football, triathlon and swimming.
