Rui Rio, candidate for president of the PSD, visited, last Saturday, 4 November, the headquarters of this party, in Loulé, where he said that it is a "priority" to move forward with the construction of the Hospital Central do Algarve.

According to the former mayor of Porto, "it is vital to look at the Algarve region with different eyes and to promote the construction of a set of infrastructures in areas such as education, social action and support for the aging population".

Around 200 activists joined the PSD headquarters in Loulé, such as Francisco Amaral, district representative of the candidacy and mayor of Castro Marim, Cristóvão Norte, deputy in the Assembly of the Republic, Desidério Silva, president of the Algarve Tourism Region, Macário Correia, former president of the Chambers of Faro and Tavira, Rui Cristina, president of PSD/Loulé, and Bruno Sousa Costa, regional campaign director and president of PSD/São Brás de Alportel.

During the initial intervention, Rui Rio stressed “the need to urgently reform the current political regime so that people can return to talking about politics and approaching, in a more democratic logic, political debate”.

The candidate also said that “the PSD does not have, nowadays, the strength and vitality that Portugal needs and this is the result of past mistakes. Portugal needs a strong PSD that is a reference».

Rui Rio, who is campaigning, also assumed that his candidacy is national and not just partisan.

"What the PSD militants will choose is the one that has more conditions and acceptance by all the Portuguese to be the next prime minister of Portugal, and I believe that I gather this consensus", he considered.

The candidate for president of the PSD said it is necessary to reduce asymmetries in the Algarve and in the country, agreeing that it is necessary to find new economic and investment models that are a credible alternative to the tourism paradigm.

In the period of debate with Algarvian militants that followed, Rio explained his position on some important issues for the Algarve region.

In this sense, regarding the formulation of the list of PSD deputies, he insisted that "priority will be given to the people of the respective district who have demonstrated their competence", since he does not agree "that the national political commission imposes names".

It is because, he believes, "each district will have people of sufficient quality to represent their fellow countrymen in the Assembly of the Republic."
