ANA Aeroportos de Portugal and MESA have just formally signed an Occupancy License for a new hangar at the Civil Terminal in Beja, where the engineering and maintenance company MESA, from the same group as the Hi Fly Airline, will develop and expand the its aircraft maintenance activity.

The investment will allow the construction of a new hangar, workshops and exterior arrangements with a total area of ​​9500 square meters, a technical center with capacity for large aircraft, including the Airbus A330, A340 and A350 models.

The new hangar will serve for the basic maintenance of the Airbus aircraft fleet of the airline Hi Fly, which already used Beja for parking and line maintenance for about 2 years, as well as for other airlines with a maintenance contract with MESA.

The works for the construction of this new infrastructure are expected to start in April 2018 and the completion of the 1st phase is expected to take place by the end of that same year.

The development and expansion of this activity also counts on a new logistical center to support the increased activities of maintenance, with about 6.000 square meters, whose location will be decided in the coming months and which could be in Lisbon, Palmela or Beja.

ANA Aeroportos stresses that «the construction of this infrastructure will enable the sustained growth of the activity of the Civil Terminal in Beja and assumes enormous importance not only for the dynamization of the Aircraft Maintenance Industry, but also for the region of Beja and Alentejo. investment will contribute to the creation of new specialized jobs in the region'.

“The MESA/Hi Fly project corresponds to our objective of developing the Beja Airport and its potential as a unit for upstream or downstream activities in aviation and airport activities”, said Thierry Ligonnière, administrator and Chief Operating Officer of ANA- Airports of Portugal.

"This project materializes our commitment to the implementation of industrial activities, namely aircraft maintenance and dismantling, in addition to the development of the medium-long term parking segment," he added.

"Beja is a privileged location for aircraft maintenance, and with the increase in capacity, we hope not only to accompany the strong growth of the Hi Fly fleet but also to attract new customers from Europe and Africa", said Paulo Mirpuri, Chairman of the Board of Administration of MESA and Hi Fly.
