The theater play “As Criadas”, by Jean Genet, will be screened on December 2nd and 3rd, at 21 pm and 30 pm, respectively, at the Cine-Teatro Louletano, in Loulé.

Directed by Marco Martins, translated (of the text) by Matilde Campilho and with three of the most renowned Portuguese actresses of today in interpretation: Beatriz Batarda, Luísa Cruz and Sara Carinhas, this will be the last national performance of this show and the only one performed in the Algarve.

About the piece one can read: «The air is nauseating. But they breathe it. From the moment the mistress leaves, the fantasy is torn in the imagination of two sisters, who are transported far from their own lives, in an urgent escape from a miserable daily life».

«In this look by Marco Martins on Genet's text, the stage becomes a cloistered space where Beatriz Batarda, Sara Carinhas and Luísa Cruz – three of the most recognized Portuguese actresses – explore the diverse identities of those characters under construction».

For director Marco Martins, working on Genet's genius is, as Luís Miguel Cintra used to say in the “A Varanda” program, «touching everything at the same time. It is a dangerous game played simultaneously with all levels of consciousness. The human conscience, the political conscience, which, it is never too much to remember since it is so forgotten, can never stop being human. But how many levels does consciousness have?».

And, in fact, “As Criadas” cannot fail to be read as an imminently political text.

«Not because it tells us about the class struggle and the desire for social ascension, as in some approaches, but because it tells us about the value of freedom and the confrontation of the individual with his oppressor, of the offender in permanent challenge to authority , highlighting the brutality of crime as a transforming weapon and deviant sexuality as a way of shaking the foundations of morally conservative societies,” says the Câmara de Loulé.

“The Maids” are the marginal Genet, the Orphan Genet, the perverse and politically controversial Genet, the author who resists definition.

“My writing is not autobiographical but my characters are related to my experiences”, said the author in an interview.

The production of this show belongs to Arena Ensemble, being a co-production of Teatro Nacional D. Maria II and Teatro Viriato.

This play lasts approximately 105 minutes (without a break) and is aimed at people over 16 years of age (capacity is limited).

Tickets cost 12 euros, can be purchased on here, increasing to 10 euros in the case of people over 65 or under 30, the Friend Card being applicable to this event.
