Loulé and Lagos Town Halls launch the 12th edition of the Sophia de Mello Breyner Andresen literary competition, aimed at students from the 2nd and 3rd cycles of basic education, as well as secondary education, or similar, throughout the Algarve.
Poetry, prose or essay works in Portuguese, illustrations and photography (original and unpublished up to the date of the final decision) that focus on the literary work of Sophia de Mello Breyner Andresen are admitted to this competition, including the indication of the original work on which they reflect.
Entries in the competition must be sent by mail, or delivered in person, to the Municipal Library of Loulé or the Municipal Library of Lagos, by March 23, 2018.
“They must be properly identified, in accordance with the participation rules. Group works with a maximum of three elements may be submitted. In this case, the names of all the authors of the work must be indicated», says the Câmara de Loulé.
There will be a single jury for the three modalities of the competition and will be composed of a representative of the Municipality of Loulé, the Municipality of Lagos, the General Directorate of Books, Archives and Libraries, the DGESTE – General Directorate of Establishments School: Algarve Services Department and a guest author.
This year, the jury is chaired by Vítor Aleixo, mayor of Loulé.
Prizes are awarded on gift cards to be collected from local bookstores in Loulé and Lagos. In total, six prizes will be awarded to each level of education, two per category.
In the poetry, prose and essay category, the 1st prize is a gift card worth 300 euros, plus a certificate of participation. The 2nd prize is, in turn, a 200 euro gift card, plus a participation certificate.
The illustration category has as 1st prize a gift card worth 300 euros and a certificate of participation.
As for the 2nd prize, it is a gift card of 200 euros, to which a certificate of participation is added.
Finally, in the photography category, the 1st prize is a gift card worth 300 euros, plus the diploma of participation, while the 2nd prize is a gift card worth 200 euros and a diploma of participation.

This competition aims to «encourage the reading of the works of this writer», concludes the Câmara de Loulé.
