The Municipality of Portimão has equipped each of the county's nine school libraries with 26 tablets, which will allow students from these establishments to access and enjoy the virtual library provided by the Digital Platform of the Municipalities of Portugal, which now has a book about this Algarve municipality.

This digital library integrates "a collection of interactive books, written and edited especially for 1st cycle school students", which focus on the ten municipalities that have already joined the platform, according to the Portimonense autarchy.

Each of these books «depicts a monument, a historical figure, a legend and the coat of arms of the county» and can be consulted not only in the tablets that now exist in school libraries in Portimo, but also, «in the future, on any smartphone or tablet with a connection to Google Play or Apple».

«The presentation provides texts, which can also be listened to, videos and 3D animations that highlight and clarify issues related to the municipality of Portimão, such as the heritage that encompasses the Parish Church of Portimão (Church of Nossa Senhora da Conceição), the figure relevant city – Manuel Teixeira Gomes, the seventh President of the Portuguese Republic, the legend about the city – “Legend of Pedra Mourinha” – and the city's coat of arms», described the municipality.

In addition to information, the digital book about Portimão has a notebook where students “can take notes and do exercises”.

«The digital book was conceived to be used in the context of the classroom and in the family, in online and offline modes, in order to promote free access to audio-script-visual educational resources suitable for children from the 1st. Basic education cycle», added the Chamber.

Portimão recently joined the Digital Platform of the Municipalities of Portugal, following a protocol signed between the City Council and the Research Center for Interactive Technologies of the Universidade Nova de Lisboa, which promotes the project.

The platform, which is responsible for teachers Isabel Alçada, Carlos Correia and Irene Tomé and has the seal of the National Reading Plan, provides content from 10 municipalities for now. In the Algarve, in addition to Portimão, Lagoa also joined the project. The other eight municipalities are Condeixa-a-Nova, Celorico de Basto, Porto, Guimarães, Castelo Branco, Guarda, Leiria and Lisbon.

«The Municipality of Portimão considers this project innovative within the framework of policies to encourage learning, as well as the promotion of reading in digital format, guaranteed from the nine 1st Cycle school libraries. This Digital Book enables the acquisition of multimedia contents about the city's heritage, intended for around 2100 students from the 1st cycle of schools in Portimão», considered the municipality.
