It is the first cemetery for animals in the Algarve and has just born in Lagos. Be it dogs, cats, guinea pigs or even parakeets, everyone will be able to "rest in peace" there.

The space, which opened this Friday, September 8, is half-walled with the new cemetery in Lagos. Cecília do Carmo, president of the Cadela Carlota association, is the mentor of the cemetery for animals. “We struggle with the death of animals every day and we think: 'what are we going to do with the animal's body now?' In certain places we buried them, but most of them were brought to the municipal kennel», he began by telling.

From there, Cecília had an idea: to apply the project for this cemetery to the 2015 Lagos Participatory Budget. «I thought right away – I'm going to run. At first, it was just a hope. I had already felt the need for this space and I had even asked the City Council», he explained.

And the truth is that the project was a winner. For now, the cemetery already has a module, with drawers, with a capacity for 39 animals, which cannot exceed 70 kilos and 1,15 meters in length.

"According to demand, the modules will be replicated until close to 200. We have space for that, so there is adhesion as we think", said Maria Joaquina Matos, mayor of Lagos, who did not miss the inauguration.

The burial is for three years, with prices ranging between 60 and 80 euros, and can be paid in installments. Even because the only objective is to guarantee a «more dignified end to the pets», explained the mayor.

Symbolically, it is a space that «will give an answer to many people who are anxious when it comes to saying goodbye to their pets», added Joaquina Matos.

The cemetery is mainly to be used by residents, but those who do not live in the municipality of Lagos can also, exceptionally, leave their animal there.

Cecília do Carmo was visibly happy throughout the ceremony. «We leave a mark here. Animals are beginning to be respected,” he said. It is that there is “a condition of death equal to that of men”, concluded, in turn, Joaquina Matos.

This cemetery cost around 50 thousand euros, with the project being the responsibility of the company António Marques – Planning and Architecture.
