Five projects from the Algarve have just won the Participatory Budget Portugal, the results of which were announced this Thursday, 14 September. The most voted was the creation of the Digital Hemeroteca do Algarve, with 703 votes, but the projects “Ecoscience” and “A Minha Praia” were also chosen.

As for Hemeroteca Digital, the idea is to make available all the newspapers and magazines produced by the Algarve from 1833 to the present, in digital format and for easy public consultation.

The face of the project was Luís Guerreiro, president of the Manuel Viegas Guerreiro Foundation, recently deceased.

The estimated budget for this project is 200 thousand euros, with an execution period of 24 months.

As for “À Minha Praia” it garnered a total of 420 votes. The objective is to combat the “scourge” of marine litter, creating, for this purpose, a “wide network for monitoring marine litter along the Algarve coast, bringing together different actors”.

Specifically, the project will proceed as follows: each school or group will adopt a beach in its area, being responsible for monitoring the type of marine litter found, monthly or quarterly».

These actions must “be supported by the Municipalities, providing transport for school-beach-school students, as well as the material needed for cleaning (reusable bags and gloves) and dealing with the forwarding of non-plastic waste”. The project proponent is Carla Lourenço, marine biologist, and responsible for another initiative related to this theme: o Straw Patrol

As for the budget, it is 39 thousand euros. The duration of the preliminary phase is six months and the project in total is one year.

Then comes the project “Feast of Nossa Senhora dos Navegantes: when images and people make a pilgrimage over the water”, whose proponent is Carla Maria Miranda de Almeida, who received 150 votes.

The idea is to promote that festival of Culatra as an intangible cultural heritage and identity of that barrier island. The investment will be 50 euros, with the project being ready in 18 months.

The fourth most voted idea was that of Dulcineia Fernandes, “Ecoscience”, which gathered 137 votes and intends to promote the scientific literacy of the population.

The proposal intends to “take advantage of the region's scientific human resources, namely biologists, chemists, physicists, engineers and all those linked to science, environment and sustainability, forming a mobile nucleus that brings knowledge to populations through technical-practical activities, small congresses and even tours».

On the other hand, the idea is also to «develop a physical nucleus (headquarters) that can bring and mobilize interested parties, namely schools and associations to carry out these actions».

The budget is 36 thousand euros, not including the development of the physical core. The duration of the preliminary phase is six months and the project in total is one year.

With 117 votes, Sofia Vieira's “Guia do Parque” also appeared. The idea here is to provide training for adults, ensuring that each one can become a “local guide”, in the municipalities of Vila do Bispo and Aljezur, in the Natural Park of Southwest Alentejo and Costa Vicentina, in order to develop the zone.

To this end, it is necessary to «take advantage of the historical and natural wealth of the area, to enhance the tourism offer and employment, in particular in the area of maritime activities (fishing, barnacle collection), hiking and biking, bird and bird watching. flora, as well as the importance of the Sagres Promontory in the history of the Discoveries».

The action is expected to cost 60 thousand euros and last for six months, starting in May 2018.

There are still two more projects with implications for the Algarve. They are “Culture for all” and “Bullfighting, cultural heritage of Portugal”. The first foresees the creation of a program that encourages the donation of books in good condition by individuals to public libraries, as well as the offer of a cultural check to all young people who turn 18, allowing them free access to museums and cultural spaces for a year.

The budget is 200 thousand euros, with a completion period of 18 months.

As for the bullfighting project, it wants to «start the process of inventorying and classifying the relevant elements that characterize bullfighting culture (recorded in the PCI national inventory), involving the work of specialists».

The project will last 24 months and has an investment of 200 thousand euros.
