This morning, the 15th of September, the University of Algarve, or the «house of knowledge», as the rector António Branco called it, received the new students of the academy, in a solemn session in the Grand Auditorium of the University of Algarve, in Gambelas.
Students and many parents attended the ceremony which, in addition to the dean and Rodrigo Teixeira, president of the Academic Association of the Algarve, was attended by Rogério Bacalhau, president of the Chamber of Faro, and by Isilda Gomes, mayor of Portimão, a city that also has a UAlg hub.
Rogério Bacalhau stressed that the arrival of new students «is a balm to help us rejuvenate the city and give it more life».
Isilda Gomes, on the other hand, relived her moments as a student in Coimbra, when Versus Tuna called the mayor on stage to dedicate a serenade to her.
The mayor of Portimão stressed that the University of the Algarve «is a reference at national and international level» and guaranteed that both she and Rogério Bacalhau, as mayors, will support students «whenever necessary» along the academic path, it lasts for at least three years.
Since there are elections at the door… Isilda Gomes explained that “all those who are in the race believe that they will win and that's why I say this, that we are going to be here”. The moment caused laughter in the room, not least because Rogério Bacalhau is a candidate for the PSD and Isilda Gomes for the PS.
The arrival of new students at the University is synonymous with practices. The topic was not addressed directly, but Rodrigo Teixeira left a guarantee: «regardless of the choice of integration of each one, we are here for all students and the activities of reception for freshmen are open to everyone».
António Branco closed the ceremony with a speech about the role of the University and also about the importance of the knowledge produced in it. Closing the rector's communication, a certainty: «the University of the Algarve, this house of knowledge, welcomes you all with open arms!».
