The concert “Missa da Maria Magdalena – Sources of Portuguese singing and polyphony”, by the ensemble Second Practice, will close the festival “Sons Antigos a Sul”, at the Chapel of Nossa Senhora de Guadalupe (Raposeira), on the 25th of August, at 17 pm.

The concert will present a repertoire resulting from ancient sources, made accessible by the work of CESEM – Center for the Study of Sociology and Aesthetics of Music, which made them available in the Ancient Portuguese Music database (PEM database).

The oldest source in which the repertoire for this celebration can be found is manuscript 034 from the Archive of the Cathedral of Braga. This sixteenth-century gradual (liturgical chant) is an example of the type of homophonic chant specific to Northern Portugal, from which the structure of the program was created.

This will be filled with polyphonic pieces from contemporary or slightly later sources: manuscripts 9, 12 and 53 from the University of Coimbra Library.

Founded in 2012, by international musicians who came together in the Netherlands to complete their studies, Second Practice became one of the most outstanding ensembles of the new generation of musicians dedicated to Early Music.

Its main objective is to build a bridge between musicians and audiences, revitalizing the musical heritage of the West and bringing it back as a lived and shared experience, through a constant fusion of research, musical excellence and performance.

This sixth edition of the ancient music cycle is an annual project of the Academy of Music of Lagos for the promotion and dissemination of Ancient Music in the Algarve.

The initiative has the support of “Quinta do Barranco Longo” and is part of DiVaM, the program for the promotion and enhancement of monuments, promoted annually by the Regional Directorate of Culture of the Algarve.

This music festival has the quality label EFFE – Europe for Festivals, Festivals for Europe, of the European Festivals Association, supported by the European Union.
