The traditional Bath Festival 29 (August) returns to Cais da Solaria, in Lagos, with the right to an antique bathing suit contest and a concert by Quim Barreiros.

This is an event that has long since become «a manifestation of a popular character already rooted in the Lacobrigense culture, being one of the main events of the municipality», according to the Câmara de Lagos.

As a way of remembering, reviving and preserving this tradition, the municipality has prepared for this day a program full of musical entertainment, beach entertainment, food and drinks, handicrafts and regional sweets.

There will also be a mandatory night bath and a concert by Quim Barreiros at 22 pm.

The event, with free entry, has the support of ACRAL – Association of Commerce and Services of the Algarve Region (Lagos Delegation), Moto Clube de Lagos, Barlavento Artisans Association and Rádio Utopia.

Also in Praia da Luz, the Bath Festival 29 will take place, being organized by the Clube Recreativo, Cultural e Desportivo Luzense. Between 21:00 pm and 3:00 am, a lot of musical entertainment is promised with Ruth, Humberto Silva and DJ Toby One. Here, entry is also free.

«The 29 bath is a mixture of folklore tradition and ritual transmitted from parents to children with the belief that the bath that night is worth 29 baths. Its origins are uncertain. Whether coming from very ancient times and linked to the rites at the end of summer, or resulting from the Arab heritage, the custom has remained. The people of the countryside no longer come in animated groups, with their donkeys and carts, but the locals continue to fulfill the tradition», says Câmara de Lagos.

«Today, there are groups of young people, more revelers and less rituals, who use that night to roast chorizo and tell stories around a fire. At midnight, the moment of bathing leads many to dive into the waters that are fleetingly illuminated by the fireworks”, he adds.

«In Lagos, it is in Solaria and Praia da Batata that the greatest number of enthusiasts gather, brought together by the proximity of the musical entertainment and the competition of old bathing suits. The tradition is also fulfilled at Meia Praia, with enthusiasts grouped around the bonfires lined up along the beach. There, people drink, eat, count and sing before and after the traditional dip in the sea», he concludes.
