The original exhibition «Praça Manuel Teixeira Gomes – Walking through History», promoted by the Group of Friends of the Portimão Museum and by the Parish Council of Portimão, in close collaboration with the Museum and the Municipality of Portimão, can already be seen in this square in Portimão. riverside area of ​​the city.

In 10 metal panels and 20 large photographs, visitors who wander there, between an ice cream and a coffee, are surprised by this unexpected encounter with the images that mark the evolution of the most dynamic space on the Portimão riverfront.

The inauguration of the exhibition took place at the end of the afternoon of last Monday, with the sound of the band from Sociedade Filarmónica Portimonense, in a way to remember the former Filarmónica de Portimão, popularly known by the band of “Paga-Zé”, which, in July of 1925, would inaugurate the old bandstand that existed in that square.

As José Gameiro, scientific director of the Portimão Museum and member of the Group of Friends of the Portimão Museum, pointed out, in one of the photos displayed on the panels, representing the band of “Paga-Zé”, «is the great-grandfather of the current conductor» of the Philharmonic.

For his part, Daniel Cartuxo, president of the Group of Friends of the Museum of Portimão, underlined the importance of this exhibition, which allows him to travel back in time and demonstrates the importance of the work of GAMP, in collaboration with the Museum itself and the Parish Council , “in safeguarding the memories of these important places in the city”.

After this first exhibition on Praça Manuel Teixeira Gomes, formerly known as Visconde de Bivar, this initiative «Walk through History», which starts with photographs from the collection of the Documentation Center of the Museum of Portimão, will in the future travel, with new images, to others emblematic spaces of the city of Portimão.
