Activists want “Sea without Garbage” to be also without oil exploration

If there is a Docapesca project, sponsored by the Government, for a “Sea without garbage”, why is the intention of allowing the exploration of oil off the Portuguese coast to continue? This was the question raised by the Platform Algarve Livre de Petróleo and Tavira in Transition during a protest on the island of Culatra, on Sunday, taking advantage of the presence of the Minister of the Sea in the procession of Nossa Senhora dos Navegantes.

Algarvian anti-oil activists think that the logic behind the “Mar sem Garbage” project clashes with the intention of allowing oil to be explored off the Portuguese coast and made a point of showing it to Ana Paula Vitorino.

The demonstrators were present with banners, posters and leaflets, and, according to the PALP, "they had the support of the population and questioned the minister", handing her documents against oil exploration. Taking advantage of the occasion, the platform informed Ana Paula Vitorino about the crowdfunding it is promoting "so that it can contribute to the injunction against prospecting and exploration of hydrocarbons."

The project "Sea without garbage" was released in 2016 and has now arrived in Culatra. Its objective is «the reduction of waste at sea through the adoption of good environmental practices by fishermen, also contributing to giving an environmentally correct destination to waste collected at sea, favoring its recycling and recovery».

For anti-oil activists, its existence turns out to be nonsense, when the initiative comes from a Government "which allows the exploitation of fossil fuels" at sea.
