(Much) fewer Brits came to the Algarve in July 2017 than in the same month last year. The UK market, the one that sends the most tourists to the Algarve, had a year-on-year decrease of 12,6 percent, which ended up affecting the overall average occupancy rate per room, which also fell, albeit only 1%, standing at 86,5%, according to data released this Friday by AHETA.

The Association of Hotels and Touristic Enterprises of the Algarve pointed out that this decrease takes place "following the Brexit and the consequent devaluation of the pound by 15% in the last year".

"The official statistics from the United Kingdom confirm a reduction in the number of Britons traveling abroad (-4,6% in May), a trend that should increase in the near future", added the association.

Fewer Brits came, but their absence was eventually made up by tourists from other nationalities. In this indicator, the Germans stand out, a market that grew 11,7% compared to the same month in 2016, in line with what has been happening since the beginning of the tourist season.

Also relevant is the 4,5 percent increase in sales volume, which means that, even with less occupancy, the Algarve hotel units managed to earn more.

By geographical area, the biggest increases in the average occupancy rate per room occurred in the areas of Portimão/Praia da Rocha (+1,3%) and Lagos/Sagres (+1,2%). In the opposite field were the zones of Faro/Olhão (-12,9%) and Vilamoura/Quarteira/Quinta do Lago (-10,1%).

“In accumulated terms, since the beginning of the year, the room occupancy rate has risen by 2,8% and the turnover an accumulated growth of 8,6%”, concluded AHETA.
