Loulé City Council was one of the 12 chosen by the Government to receive the implementation plan for a “Living Laboratory for Decarbonisation”.

With this project "the intention is to promote the decarbonization of cities through technological solutions that increase efficiency and reduce energy consumption, contributing to create innovative, sustainable and inclusive cities that improve the quality of life of citizens", says the municipality loulet.

A “Living Laboratory for Decarbonization” «translates into the adaptation of an urban space with a local identity in order to become a space for testing, demonstrating and appropriating technological solutions integrated in a real context that promote the decarbonization of living in cities , through the integration of solutions in the fields of transport and mobility, energy efficiency in buildings, innovative environmental services».

The objective is also to “promote the circular economy, in a logic of interaction between the municipality, knowledge centers, companies, industries and citizens”.

In addition to Loulé, Almada, Seixal, Águeda, Matosinhos, Figueira da Foz, Maia, Évora, Mafra, Alenquer, Barcelos and Braga were chosen to host the program, among the 35 applications submitted.

According to government officials, «excellence, innovation and impact» were the criteria that formed the basis for choosing the 12 Portuguese cities that will be set up as incubators for this project. Each of the cities will receive an amount of 80 thousand euros to carry out the programmed initiatives.

Loulé has been, in the opinion of its City Council, «one of the Portuguese municipalities that has invested the most in promoting environmental protection and that has demonstrated, through concrete initiatives, that it is at the forefront of concerns about the future and the sustainability of the territory'.

«The integration in the CLIMADAPT project and the definition of a Municipal Strategy for Adaptation to Climate Change (EMAAC), with 28 adaptation measures, are the most visible aspects of this commitment to the environment», he concludes.
