The signing of a protocol with the Prison Establishment of Olhão (EPO) marked the inauguration of the new headquarters of the Parish Council of Olhão, last Monday, 10 July.
Taking advantage of stimuli from the Employment and Professional Training Institute (IEFP), «the protocol signed between the Parish of Olhão and the Prison, aims to reintegrate two inmates, through their inclusion in jobs in the Parish of Olhão, providing them with a return to the world of work as a way of social recognition of their rehabilitation», explains the Junta de Freguesia from Olhano.
This agreement was recognized by Celso Manata, general director of Reinsertion and Prison Services, who was present, stressing that "prisoners must feel useful to society", believing that "this is the right path, in order to give a second chance to who committed crimes, but with great confidence».
The official underlined that this "is impossible without the support of the local authorities".
With the objective of «promoting conditional freedoms», that director-general believes that «these protocols are visionary», defending that «social reinsertion is a work that has to be done in community».
Everything happened after the presentation of the new headquarters, with a guided tour of the multipurpose room, «where there is a mural with old photos of Olhão and an exhibition of paintings by students from CAPO – Centro de Pintores Olhanenses», says the Parish Council.
The table of honor, composed of Celso Manata, Luciano Jesus, president of the Parish Council of Olhão, and Júlio de Melo, director of the Prison of Olhão, invited Cândida Cativo, member of the Parish executive, to make a public reading of the summary of the protocol, before its signature.
President Luciano Jesus stressed that the Parish of Olhão was the first public entity in the municipality to establish synergies with the EPO, recalling the work carried out in the nurseries of green spaces, which «were recovered in an exemplary way by the prisoners, at low cost, defending the public treasury and promoting the reintegration of individuals deprived of their freedom”.
The participation of inmates of the Prisons of Olhão and of Faro in the “Mission to clean up paradises in Olhão”, which last summer collected 1,8 tonnes of garbage from one of the islands of the Ria Formosa, it was also remembered with gratitude by the president of the Parish of Olhão, who is a candidate for mayor .
This first official act at the new headquarters was attended by other public entities such as the commissioner of the PSP of Olhão, the deputy directors of the Prison Establishments of Faro and Silves, the regional director and coordinator of social reinsertion and several executive members of the Parish of Olhão.
To culminate the day of the 322nd anniversary of the Parish of Olhão, the official inauguration of the new headquarters took place at 20:00.
