The 5th B class from the EB 2/3 School of São Vicente de Vila do Bispo won the first prize in the national competition “Ideas para Mudar o Mundo”, with the “Gatil de Intervenção Comunitária” project. The idea of this group, composed mostly of students from Sagres, was considered the one that best responded to the challenge of the initiative, launched by National Geographic and which involves the Jane Goodall Institute.

The proposal of the Vila-Bispenses students suggests the construction of shelters for abandoned cats «whose intervention involves the joint efforts of several institutions: Municipal Council, Home for the Elderly of Santa Casa da Misericórdia, Primary School, Jardim-de- childhood, families and the fishing community», according to the Town Council of Vila do Bispo.

The contest “Ideias para Mudar o Mundo” is aimed at 2nd cycle students (5th and 6th year) and is jointly promoted by National Geographic, National Geographic Junior Magazine and SPEDH – Portuguese Society for Humanitarian Education, responsible entity for the implementation in Portugal of the International Program “Roots & Shoots” of the Jane Goodall Institute.

The contest challenges students to observe the community around them, paying special attention to the environment, people and animals, “so that they can identify some aspect they would like to improve or change in the form of an idea to improve the world”.

By winning this competition, in addition to a monthly subscription to the magazine and a trip to the Tivoli BBVA Theater and the Zoo, the group had the visit of technicians from National Geographic, who held a Workshop on Jane Goodall and her Roots & Shoots program and that they registered the project with photographic report and film.

The students in the 5thB class even had the opportunity to meet the famous primatologist and advocate of animal life Jane Goodal. At the Lisbon Zoo, young people from Vila-Bispens participated in a workshop with primate keepers.
