The PCP recommends to the Government that "resume the process of construction of the Guadiana International Bridge between Alcoutim and Sanlúcar", having presented on Friday, 23 June, a draft resolution that goes in that direction.

According to the PCP, the Government must carry out "the necessary steps – including contacts with the Spanish and Andalusian authorities – with a view to the rapid implementation of this infrastructure, which is vital for the economic and social development of the Northeastern Algarve."

«The construction of a bridge between Alcoutim and the Spanish town of Sanlúcar is an old demand of the populations on both sides of the Guadiana River, it being recognized that the construction of this infrastructure would have a very important impact on boosting the local economy and on attracting and securing new inhabitants”, he adds.

This would also combat “the process of depopulation and desertification that affects Alcoutim and the neighboring municipalities”.

This claim is not new. In fact, several political parties have already expressed themselves in favor of building this bridge over the last few decades.

In February 2012, for example, the Parliamentary Group of the PCP raised this issue with the former PSD/CDS Government, which, in its response, stated that “the Alcoutim-Sanlúcar International Bridge is a link of local interest, so it is not foreseen in the PRN2000 [National Road Plan 2000]”, and “its construction and financing will be the responsibility of the local and regional authorities of the respective countries [Portugal and Spain]”.

In this way, "the previous Government expressed its total disinterest in the project to build the bridge between Alcoutim and Sanlúcar and sent its funding to local and regional entities, knowing full well that they did not have the financial capacity to carry out this project", he considers the PCP.

In July 2013, the communists presented the draft resolution No. 798/XII, which recommended the Government to build the Guadiana International Bridge between Alcoutim and Sanlúcar, which was rejected by the PSD/CDS majority at the time, but deserved the votes in favor of PS, PCP, BE and PEV.

The new composition of the Assembly of the Republic, resulting from the October 2015 legislative elections, “opened up the possibility of resuming the construction process of this bridge, since the parties that previously voted in favor of the PCP's Draft Resolution now have a majority of deputies,” according to the communists.

For this reason, the PCP says that the Government “should assume responsibility for conducting the process of building the international bridge between Alcoutim and Sanlúcar, developing with the Spanish authorities and the Autonomous Community of Andalusia the necessary steps to ensure the financing, the carrying out of the previous studies, launch and completion of the work».
