The Government guarantees that it will allow the EB1/JI school in Santa Bárbara de Nexe to open another class in the next school year, to prevent children who attend the 4th grade, in this educational establishment, from having to be dispersed by classes 1st, 2nd and 3rd years.

The Ministry of Education responded to a question addressed to it by the PCP parliamentary group, in February, regarding the high rate of school failure in this school, ensuring that measures will be taken not only at the curricular level, but also for social and pedagogical monitoring of the children and an assessment of the situation made.

About four months ago, communist deputies, including the PCP parliamentarian elected by the Algarve Paulo Sá, denounced the "serious problem of academic failure that has been going on for several years" in this school in the municipality of Faro.

With failure rates ranging from 64% in Portuguese for 1st year students and 58% failure in mathematics for 4th year students to 39% for Mathematics (3rd year) and 37% for Portuguese (4th year), the rates failure rates "are much higher than the national average rates".

As the communists explained in the question addressed to the Ministry of Education, the basis of this situation would be the decision of the tutelage to have only allowed «the opening of 3 classes, implying that the 4th year students had to be distributed among the 1st classes, 2nd and 3rd years.

«It should be noted that the School, in the current academic year, has 42 hours for educational support, allowing the opening of a fourth class, with 17 hours remaining for educational support. Furthermore, the School has a free room, which could have been used for the fourth class», they illustrated.

According to the Government, the so-called credit hours of this educational establishment will be reorganized, "regrouping in an existing vacant room all 4th year students", with a schedule of 25 hours per week, which will allow "the full curricular functioning" of this class . The tutelage also announced that it will end mixed classes in the 1st and 3rd year.

Other measures announced are the carrying out of «a diagnosis and interventions on the pre-reading skills of students aged 4 and 5 at the EB1/JI of Santa Bárbara de Nexe, to be carried out between September and December 2017».

“The work of psychologists” of the Pinheiro e Rosa School Grouping, to which the primary school belongs, will also be discussed.

«Despite the efforts of the Group's Direction, the number of hours of support from psychologists that can be provided to the School is insufficient for the needs. Thus, it would be necessary to increase the number of psychologists from the Pinheiro e Rosa School Group, allowing these psychologists to allocate more time to monitoring students at the EB1/JI School of Santa Bárbara de Nexe», warned the PCP in February.
