What's new and innovative in Algarve vineyards is the motto for the 1st Algarve Wine Symposium, scheduled for next Thursday, May 11, in Faro. The initiative of the Algarve Wine Commission ends with the official delivery of the prizes for the 2017 edition of the Algarve Wine Contest.

The event, which takes place in the auditorium of the School of Hotel and Tourism (in Faro) is divided into three panels: Viticulture, Oenology and New Markets.

With the presence of renowned experts who will address cross-cutting issues to the wine universe, the symposium arouses «the interest and curiosity on the part of the wine community, as the Algarve sector has been experiencing a growing and exuberant evolution, not only due to the increase of producers, but also for obtaining prizes, both national and international, for the wines produced in the region», stresses the CVA.

In the first panel of the Symposium, dedicated to Viticulture, which begins at 11:00 am, Sónia Rodrigues, from CVA, will present the SIAC-Qualification project «Algarve Wines & Spirits». Next, Pedro Tereso will talk about sustainable viticulture and the work that has been done in Morgado do Reguengo.

The improvement and preservation of the Algarve variety “Negra Mole” will be the theme of the communication by Antero Martins, from the Provid/Instituto Superior de Agronomia, followed by the intervention of António Maçanita, on “Success factors of Vitivultura in the Algarve”.

Ending this morning panel, Armindo Rosa and João Costa, from the Regional Directorate of Agriculture and Fisheries, will address the theme of the «CEAT Ampelographic Collection – Preservation, Characterization and Study – wine and table varieties».

In the afternoon, the panel dedicated to Oenology begins at 14:30 pm, with a presentation by Manuel Lima, from IVDP – Instituto dos Vinhos do Douro e Porto, on «Sensory profile of wines from Portugal».

Then, Fernando Pedrosa (Proenol) will talk about «Biotechnology oenological tools and strategies for hot areas», such as the Algarve.

The third and final panel, dedicated to Promotion and the Markets, begins at 16 pm with the communication «Protection of Trademarks and Designations of Origin», by the lawyer Luís Sommer Ribeiro.

This is followed by the presentation of the Interactive Map of Algarve Wines, by Arturo Gonçalves (PlotBiz) and “O Mercado Global dos Vinhos”, by Jorge Monteiro, President of ViniPortugal.

Apart from the initiative, at the end, the Awards of the 2017 Algarve Wine Contest, organized by CVA on 9 April.
