Cachopo, in the municipality of Tavira, and Paderne (Albufeira), in the category “Rural Villages”, Ferragudo (Lagoa) and Estoi (Faro), in “Aldeias Monumento”, Alte (Loulé), in “Villages Authentic”, and even Bordeira (Aljezur), in “Villages in Protected Areas”, are the six locations in the Algarve that have just been selected, this Friday. Friday, the 7th, as pre-finalists of the contest “7 Wonders of Portugal Villages”.
The announcement was made today at a ceremony in the village of Pena, in São Pedro do Sul.
On the part of Paderne, this candidacy process was presented and coordinated by the Albufeira Council in an “enthusiastic” way, as Carlos Silva e Sousa, mayor of Albufeira, refers. For the mayor, «Paderne, for its heritage, for its cultural wealth, for its people, is a land that deserves to be in this group».
To reach this point, the locations were selected, in a total of 332, by a panel of 49 experts, the next step being the public voting that starts on the 9th of July and runs until the 20th of August, during seven galas to be broadcast by RTP.
This is followed by two weeks of voting for the 14 finalists. The Official Declaration of the 7 Wonders of Portugal Villages will take place on September 3, when seven locations are elected, in as many categories, as winners.
The initiative aims to create a new tourist itinerary for Portugal and has the institutional support of the Office of the Deputy Minister, the Minister of Agriculture, Forests and Rural Development, the Secretary of State for Tourism, Tourism of Portugal, the Mission Unit for the Enhancement of the Interior, ICNF – Institute for the Conservation of Nature and Forests, National Culture Center, Minha Terra Federation and Associação Portugal Genial.
