The exhibition of the winning works of the Estação Imagem 2016 Award can be seen in the Algarve, in an initiative of the Lagoa Photography Meetings, the result of a collaboration between the Municipality of Lagoa, the University of Algarve and the Associação Estação Imagem.

A exhibition will be open to the public in the Municipal Park of Sítio das Fontes, near Estômbar (Lagoa), between the 7th of April and the 6th of May, and then at the António Rosa Mendes Library, on the Gambelas Campus of the University of Algarve, in Faro, between May 11th and June 9th.

In the Municipal Park of Sítio das Fontes, there will be a soft opening tomorrow, April 7th, from 17 pm, and then the exhibition can be visited from Tuesday to Saturday, from 11 am to 13 pm and from 14 pm to 18 pm. Admission is free.

Portuguese photojournalist Mário Cruz was the main winner of the 2016 edition of the Estação Imagem Award, with the photographic series «Talibés, Escravos Contemporâneos», recorded in Senegal and Guinea-Bissau, in May and June 2015.

It is a highly awarded work, as it also won the 1st prize in the category Contemporary Issues No. W 2016, won the POYi 2016 – Picture of the International Year in category Issue Reporting Picture Story, and was also recognized in the Magnum Photography Awards 2016.

There will now be the opportunity to review, in Lagoa and Faro, some of the photographs taken by Mário Cruz. In addition to “Talibés, contemporary slaves”, works by nine other photojournalists are on display: Gabriel Tizón, Bruno Colaço, Nuno Pinto Fernandes, Leonel de Castro, José Carlos Carvalho, Nuno Fox, Gonçalo Delgado, Vlad Sokhin, Pedro Armestre.

José Carlos Carvalho, who now presents the series «Who laughs last laughs better», collaborated with ENFOLA*2016, with two photographs for the initiative «forced migrations», exposed on the exterior walls of the Fort of Nossa Senhora da Encarnação, in Carvoeiro, during the summer of last year.

Meanwhile, in Viana do Castelo, next Saturday, April 8th, the winners of the Estação Imagem 2017 Award will be announced. at Sítio das Fontes and at the University of Algarve's Gambelas Campus Library.

According to Nuno Loureiro, director of the Photography Meetings in Lagoa, «this collaboration between Associação Estação Imagem, the Municipality of Lagoa and the University of Algarve should be extended to the next few years, so that the Algarve permanently integrates the circuit of tour of the annual exhibition'.
