The duo Mitó Mendes and Sandra Batista, now transformed into Ladies, makes his debut in the Algarve with his first job at the Casa do Povo in Santo Estêvão, this Saturday, April 1st, at 22 pm.

This is the first of four concerts of the “Serões da Primavera” cycle, which, from April to June, brings to the Barrocal of the municipality of Tavira renowned names in the Portuguese music scene, in a perspective of decentralization, combating social exclusion and desertification that the territory has suffered.

As Ladies are the first to take the stage of spring nights and present, in the Algarve, the debut album “Acho Que É Meu Dever Não Gostor”.

The two artists were part of the last formation of the naif and, after their separation in 2014, they continued to meet and friendship brought them together in this project. “There is a fateful lunch, when I show her one of my lyrics and Mitó said she would like to try it out and develop more. From then on, the songs began to emerge and this appetite came, between the two, to start creating and exploring our side» reveals Sandra Baptista, to Musical|Sul Informação.

The origin is admittedly from the naif, after all, were the female side of the band, and the name Ladies it refers to one of the emblematic themes of the group, serving as a reminder of the “place” where their lives crossed, almost in a past life, because now the path is certainly different.

«This project is, above all, to break, a little bit, some prejudices, having a lot of courage and a lot of nerve to move forward with something new. We are at a stage in our life when self-esteem is balanced, healthy and egos have disappeared», says the artist.

That is to say, it doesn't bother them too much if people don't work on the project. Sandra Batista explains: «we are having such a great pleasure and challenging and surprising us so much, that this is the added value. It's a very personal project».

It is also minimalist from a musical point of view, based on Mitó Mendes' voice and guitar and Sandra Baptista's accordion and electric bass, supported by sets of programming that highlight the rawness and nudity of the musical language.

There are songs that intentionally don't have a chorus, because "they feel like it", they do what they feel. «They are songs, but they are them in our way and completely stripping the prejudices that surround us. But this is due to our musical experience and the maturity that we ended up having». Otherwise, he guarantees, it was difficult to create a new path «as minimalist, raw and real as the Ladies».

The duo assumes singing about life, the experiences of all of us, in a range of emotional fields, in a rebellious post-punk, but with the maturity that life and musical experiences have given them. “It's that punch on the table. I am fed up with everything that is being imposed on society and I feel like it and I have the right to do things my way. It is this attitude that we have, yes».

If this can be seen as a habitual posture of teenagers, from where many of the musical protest movements such as the from punk ou hip hop, it is true that there has been a growing number of “forty-year-old” artists musically expressing their contestation. “It is a sign that we are more attentive to our society, that we are more cultured, more informed and more interested in changing the things that are wrong and that is very good”, comments the composer.

The audience's response shows that they understand and enter the universe Ladies. Like the music, the presentation is also minimalist, just the two performers on stage, but with the ability to convey the complicity and the different worlds created in each theme.

As her debut in the Algarve, Sandra Batista leaves the challenge: "I challenge people to leave their homes and have the courage to watch an hour of an emotional injection and, believe me, they won't regret it."

After Ladies on the 1st of April, the Serões da Primavera follows on the 28th of April, with Samuel Úria, on the 5th of May, with António Chainho, and on the 3rd of June, with Bruno Pernadas, in a cycle that “travels” through sounds ranging from jazz, the Portuguese guitar, the pop, to rock, world music or even the people. All concerts start at 22:00.

During the entire duration of the Cycle, there will be an exhibition of drawings by Margarida dos Santos.
