The Algarve Olympic athlete Ana Cabecinha was crowned National Marching Champion, after winning the 20-kilometer road race, which took place this Sunday in São João da Madeira.

The marcher from Clube Oriental do Pechão was faster than the Olympic and Inês Henriques, holder of the 50 km world record, who was second, followed by Mara Ribeiro, both from the Rio Maior Swimming Club.

A title that ends up attesting to the athlete's good form, who struggled with some injuries in the last year. In the Olympic Games that took place in the summer in Rio de Janeiro, Ana Cabecinha was the best Portuguese in the competition in the 20 km Marcha, having secured the 6th place, the best mark ever in Portugal in athletic walking, in one of the Olympics.

Despite the excellent result she achieved, the athlete from Oriental do Pechão did this race plagued by physical problems, as he confessed in the aftermath of the Olympic Games, in an interview with Sul Informação. «I couldn't warm up for the race. I had a horrible pain in my back and I just cried and cried, it was very complicated. But it never crossed my mind not to compete», he said.

In August, Ana Cabecinha will have another opportunity to try to obtain an international title, at the World Athletics Championships, which are being disputed in London.

A victory that has already been recognized by the Chamber of Olhão, through its president, António Pina. «It is a great pride to welcome in the municipality of Olhão an athlete who is an example of perseverance, dedication and pursuit of excellence», considered the mayor from Olhão.

«The Clube Oriental de Pechão is one of the clubs in the municipality supported by the Municipality under the program contracts that we annually celebrate with these entities. It is with great satisfaction that we see this support producing results, which motivates us to always try to increase as much as possible, which has been happening with this Executive», he added.
