The occupancy rate of Algarve hotel units, in January, rose 9,6% compared to the same month in 2016, standing at 37,5%. Since 2001, the occupancy rate of hotels in the Algarve, in the first month of the year, has not reached such a high value.

According to the Association of Hotels and Touristic Enterprises of the Algarve, «the overall average occupancy rate/room was 3,3pp higher than that recorded in the previous year». The sales volume also rose 12,2% compared to 2016.

The markets that most contributed to the increase were the British (+1,2pp), the Dutch (+1,0pp) and the French (+0,5pp).

However, the domestic market registered a drop of 0,5pp, "in line with what has happened during 2016".

By geographical areas, the biggest increases occurred in Portimão / Praia da Rocha and Albufeira (both with +11,3pp). The main decline was registered in Faro / Olhão (-6,6pp).

In accumulated terms, according to AHETA, in the last 12 months, the occupancy/room rate has increased by 6,8%.
