A Garden of Camellias will be inaugurated on Saturday, the 18th, at 15 pm, in Monchique, this being the "great news" of another edition of the Festival das Camellias, which takes place in that mountain village, on the 00th and 18th of February.

This garden, according to the Monchique Chamber, which organizes the festival, with the support of the Associação Portuguesa das Camelias, «depicts the desire to cultivate a space for contemplating the flower and, above all, to preserve a place so that future generations can continue to dignify this local cultural icon».

But, in addition to the thousand and one activities over the two days, namely the Camellia Route and the competition, the municipality also wants to carry out an «inventory of camel trees with public interest in the municipality of Monchique». The objective is to «map, inventory and catalog the camel trees existing in the county», to create a catalog that is not only a «work tool», but also an «important archive in the study of this plant».

The Camellia Festival is presented by the municipality as «a true hymn to the natural and cultural heritage of the municipality», the event intending to «continue to affirm the camellias as another differentiating element of this municipality».

The third edition of the Camellias Festival, which will take place in Largo de S. Sebastião, has the usual exhibition and competition “Camélias in bloom – enchantment and natural beauty”, which brings together this year more interested parties and participants, mobilizing more and more people from the region. county.

Another activity will be the photography contest “Camélias de Monchique”, which aims to continue to make known, through photography, the varieties of camellias in the municipality, as well as to raise awareness among competitors about the beauty of this flower.

The Camellias Route is always very popular, in which participants who sign up will set out to discover the camellias, along exuberant routes, with the Serra de Monchique as a backdrop. This year, the Route has new features that "promise to surprise the participants".

The camellia also brings together arts and crafts and dance joins it, with the performance “A Dança das Camelias”, by PIA – Projetos de Intervenção Artística.

There will also be the circus theater “Jardim das Camélias”, by Moliére Produções, as well as music with a jazz concert by the Hugo Alves Signature Trio (Algarve Jazz Orchestra).

The program also includes the presentation of the book “How to take care of my Camélias”, by Jorge Garrido and António Assunção, as well as a demonstration of bodypainting.

To further enrich the program, this year there are two new items: “Ilustra-te”, to which artist Selma Pimentel was invited, who will create illustrations for the festival. The camellia is always present in these works and to it are added other icons of the municipality such as the lynx, honey, bee, arbutus and other representative elements of Monchique.

On the other hand, Leonel Telo, a local artisan, debuts the “Festival ComVida” section, which intends to bring the work on the spot artists, through the creation of original pieces for the Festival das Camelias.
