On February 17, national and Spanish experts will be at the “Laranja XXI” conference, an initiative of the Municipality of Silves as part of the program of the 1st Mostra “Silves Capital da Laranja”.

“This is a forum for discussion and debate that we believe has been lacking for a long time,” says Rosa Palma, mayor of Silves. In the opinion of the mayor, "citrus is one of the most decisive and structuring activities in the county and region and it is necessary to bring up current issues, in order to modernize practices, but above all to reflect on the paths that will allow us to promote sustained growth and promotion of this activity, which is synonymous with quality and prestige for Silves and the region».

Throughout the day, in Fissul's auditorium, central themes for citrus production and producers will be debated.

During the morning, the first communication, by Júlio Manuel Isidoro Cabrita, from the Investment Services Directorate of the Algarve Regional Directorate of Agriculture and Fisheries (DRAPAlg), will focus on “Funding under the PDR2020”. Bearing in mind that the application periods are in progress, this could be an issue of great importance for farmers, who will have the opportunity to clarify doubts.

Issues of a technical nature will also be analyzed, namely the “Law on the application of Phytopharmaceutical Products/Inspection of Sprayers”, which Celestino Soares, DRAPAlg technician will address in his communication.

The “Emerging pests and diseases/Enemies of Quarantine, related to the citrus culture” will be seen with the help of the technician from the General Directorate of Food and Veterinary (DGAV) João Nuno Barbosa.

After the lunch break, “The quality of the Algarve's citrus fruit: threats, challenges and opportunities” will be seen in detail by Amílcar Duarte, professor at the University of Algarve, while the “Biological production of citrus fruit in Andalusia/Spain” will be discussed. explained and presented by Francisco José Arenas, IFAPA coach of the Junta de Andalucia.

The conference will end with a round table, whose central theme is one that most concerns the sector and generates the most controversy: “Citrus Production, Marketing and Distribution in the Algarve”.

Several companies linked to production and marketing will be present (namely Cacial, Frutas Mourinho, Frusoal, Frutas Martinho and Frutas Lourdes).

All those present will be invited, on this occasion and throughout the day, to participate, asking questions and intervening in the moments of debate.

The conference “Laranja XXI” is part of the program of the 1st Mostra “Silves Capital da Laranja”, whose program it can be consulted on the municipality's portal.

Participation is free and all farmers, technicians, traders and stakeholders with interests in this activity may participate.
