The public tender for the requalification of the current Largo Manuel Gomes, in Monte Francisco, in order to prepare it to be renamed Largo Paco de Lucía.

Like Sul Informação advanced in June 2016, the municipality of Castromarinense will take advantage of the connection of the renowned Spanish musician to this town in the municipality, where his hand Luzia Gomes was born, to create a cultural and tourist attraction there.

For this, around 325 thousand euros will be invested, an amount that includes not only the requalification of the square, but also «the improvement of the surrounding streets (east zone), an intervention that was also essential to improve mobility conditions in Monte Francisco », according to the Chamber of Castro Marim.

"At the same time, a tender will be opened shortly for the paving of the streets in the western area of Monte Francisco, an intervention valued at 100 thousand euros," added the municipality.

The Largo Paco de Lucía intends to be «a memorial to the guitarist, which evokes and rescues a little of the life and work of the musician, composer and performer» and foresees «the creation of a gardened pedestrian space, combined with artistic pieces that evoke sensory the artist Paco de Lucía, with an allusion to his chosen instrument, the guitar».

Relatives of Paco de Lucía with the municipal executive of Castro Marim

An audio system will also be installed at the site, «to provide visitors with the musical legacy of the genius of guitar and flamenco». “When the Largo is completed, it will be a place of pilgrimage for Spanish tourists, who will feel Paco de Lucía in that place”, anticipated the mayor of Castro Marim, in an interview he gave to Sul Informação last year.

The late Spanish artist still has many relatives in Monte Francisco. During his life, he always made a point of publicly assuming his Castro-Marine ancestry.
This connection between Paco de Lucía and Castro Marim is also celebrated through the Festival de Lucía, patronized by the fado singer Mariza and which will have its 2nd edition in August, and the initiative «Secrets of Lucía», a cultural proposal scheduled for the 17th of March and bearing the 365 Algarve seal.
«The twinning with the municipality of Algeciras, in Andalusia, where Paco de Lucía was born and which was also one of his great sources of musical inspiration, is also in progress», highlighted the Chamber of Castro Marim.

The requalification of Largo Paco de Lucía is a project framed in the Action Plan for the Development of Endogenous Resources (PADRE), approved under the PO CRESC Algarve 2020, whose application for FEDER funding is ongoing.
