“Dark Sky Alqueva”, an “innovative example of tourism observing the starry sky”, was the company invited to the second working session of the “Tourism & Good Practices” initiative, aimed at entrepreneurs from Baixo Guadiana, which took place in the last February 20th, at the Casa do Sal in Castro Marim.

Apolónia Rodrigues, coordinator of the “Dark Sky” route, presented the first place in the world to receive the “Starlight Tourism Destination” certification, given to «visitable places» that are «characterized by the excellent quality for the contemplation of starry skies and for the practice of tourist activities based on this resource», says the Odiana association.

This is, in fact, the first Portuguese “Dark Sky” reserve, which is made up of the six municipalities adjacent to Alqueva (Alandroal, Barrancos, Moura, Mourão, Portel and Reguengos de Monsaraz) and has an associated “Rota Dark Sky Alqueva” , which has accommodation, catering, producers of regional products and tourist entertainment companies.

Based on this route, tourists can enjoy various night activities such as stargazing, bird watching, hiking, horseback riding, wildlife watching, canoeing, lakeside dinners, activities with children and even wine tasting.

The session also took place within the scope of the project "Tourism in Low Density Areas (Lower Guadiana)", whose goal is to learn about the positioning of the offer in international markets and coordinate it with the business sector in the region, focusing on the issue of tourism sustainable.

As such, this initiative has the Odiana seal and follows the approval of this association under the SIAC (Support System for Collective Actions), and the CRESC Algarve 2020.
