The Alcoutim Council approved the attribution of a subsidy to the Almargem Association, for the maintenance and management of Via Algarviana, in 2017. The alcouteneja municipality will contribute with 3121 euros to a cake made up of funds allocated by 11 municipalities in the region. to guarantee the viability of this pedestrian and cycling route that crosses the interior of the region.

«The Via Algarviana is a Great Pedestrian Route (GR13) that connects Alcoutim to Cabo de S. Vicente. Created in 2006, with 300 kilometers at the time, it has since been extended to 800 kilometers, mostly installed in the Serra Algarvia. Five new connections and twelve new pedestrian routes were added to the Great Pedestrian Route,” recalled the Alcoutim City Council.

The creation of the Via Algarviana and its management, in the first phase, were guaranteed by funds from the European Union. In 2016, 11 Algarve Councils – Alcoutim, Aljezur, Castro Marim, Tavira, S. Brás de Alportel, Loulé, Silves, Monchique, Lagos, Portimão and Vila do Bispo – agreed to make an annual contribution to the management and maintenance of this infrastructure.

This support results, according to the Alcoutim Chamber, from the recognition that this is «an important instrument to affirm the Algarve in general and the Serra Algarvia in particular as a destination for nature tourism, especially in the low season, and thus function as a one more means of combating seasonality».
