The rehabilitation work of the beach of Monte Gordo will start in the first half of February, in an intervention by the Municipality of Vila Real de Santo António and the Portuguese Environment Agency (APA).

The construction of a two-kilometre elevated pedestrian walkway along the entire seafront, worth one million euros, will be the first step in the major operation that will renew the face of Monte Gordo.

The plan already approved by the APA foresees 18 new beach supports, which will replace the old ones, as the new structures are built.

«The Coastal Waterfront Management Plan (POOC), approved by the former socialist executive of the municipality, only provided for the construction of 8 beach supports, but through its review and the series of meetings held between the City Council and the APA, the installation of 18 units was possible», notes Luís Gomes, president of the VRSA City Council.

"This means that all entrepreneurs who had activity on the beach and have their situation regularized will not need to submit to a tender, putting an end to the system of precarious licenses that was in force until now", continues the mayor.

The construction of the walkway is intended to ensure access to the sand and new beach facilities, allowing movement along the bathing areas. It will be illuminated throughout, will have rest areas and will create a pedestrian and leisure circuit.

The VRSA autarchy will bear the financial charges for the project, inspection and coordination of the work.

In order to support operators, the municipality will design the architecture of new supports, providing them free of charge to concessionaires, and will create a technical monitoring office in Monte Gordo.

The rehabilitation of the beach of Monte Gordo joins the process of requalification of the seafront, promoted by the municipality of VRSA and valued at 2,2 million euros.
