The Ministry of Culture, in response to the motion “Balsa, a Common Heritage of Europeans”, approved by the Municipal Assembly of Tavira, confirmed the intention already advanced by the Regional Directorate of Culture, in November, to expand the “Roman Archaeological Station of Luz de Tavira”, located at Quinta da Torre de Aires, and to delimit a new Special Protection Area (ZEP).

In response to the motion, presented by the PS Municipal Group, and unanimously approved, the Minister of Culture says that «the Regional Directorate of Culture of the Algarve will propose to the Directorate-General for Cultural Heritage the opening of a procedure to expand the classification of the 'Roman Archaeological Station of Luz' as a Site of Public Interest, covering all areas where traces effectively documented by archaeological works are located, specifying the contents and restrictions to which the use of the land should be subject and simultaneously proceed to the delimitation of new ZEP'.

This information has been confirmed to Sul Informação by Alexandra Gonçalves, regional director of Culture, who added that «we are working on this proposal, so that the Archaeological Station and the ZEP are expanded».

For this to happen, it is necessary that the archaeological prospection works in progress are completed and that a final report be presented, which has not happened yet.

Still, according to Alexandra Gonçalves, “we can make a provisional proposal. We are making an effort, in consultation with the Câmara de Tavira, and working to present a request for a new delimitation».

In a statement, the PS of Tavira reacted to the responses of the Ministry of Culture with "rejoicing", since, for the socialists, the letter "shows respect for the Local Democratic Power, as a legitimate representative of the populations".

The Tavirense PS underlines "the clarifying responses of the Minister of Culture to the concerns of countless Tavirense citizens about the situation of the Roman Archaeological Station of Luz de Tavira, preservation and enhancement of its heritage and inspection of possible interventions in the Special Protection Zone" and highlights the clarification of the «role of the Municipal Museum of Tavira in the process, as the final destination of the collections currently dispersed».
