Jaime Albino Ramos will receive the «Alumni Career Award 2016» from the University of Algarve (UAlg) on the 11th of January, at 17 pm, in the Seminar Room of the Rectory of the Campus of Gambelas.

In the same session, Paulo Condado will receive an honorable mention.

This award aims, explains UAlg, «to honor and annually distinguish a graduate in one of the courses taught at the University of Algarve», recognizing his career «with proven relevance» in the development of society or in the recognition of the quality of teaching at UAlg.

In this sense, the biologist Jaime Albino Ramos, graduated in 1989, at the University of Algarve, with a final work on the Galinha Sultana or caiman, at the time in danger of extinction.

«He is a biologist with an exceptional academic background, which illustrates and exemplifies how much willpower and the ability to work and face challenges, well framed by a higher education, can bear fabulous results. It embodies the commitment, hard work and practical spirit in solving problems, combined with beautiful social and human, intellectual and pedagogical skills», describes UAlg.

Jaime Albino Ramos holds a master's degree from the University of Durham, United Kingdom (1990), and a doctorate from the University of Oxford (1994).

He is currently a professor at the University of Coimbra, where he develops many works, with students he advises, related to birds of the Ria Formosa.

He has several projects in the area of ​​marine biology and ecology, all over the world, such as Seychelles, Cape Verde, mainland Portugal and the Azores Islands, where he studied the «Priolo», having contributed with his study to the preservation of the laurel forest in the northeast of São Miguel Island, and for the natural preservation of the bird.

In his honor, the bird was named by the Portuguese Society for the Study of Birds as the «Priolo» Jaime. It has about 150 articles published in indexed journals and an h-index 23, obtained from SCOPUS.

Paulo Condado, who will receive an honorable mention, graduated in Computer Engineering, in the Management branch, from the University of Algarve, in 2002, and later obtained a PhD, in 2009, in Electronic Engineering and Computer Science from the same University.

He has dedicated his research to accessibility solutions, technological support for various disabilities and digital/social integration.

“His intelligence and his very strong character allowed him not only to show his value, but also to win in a competitive environment, despite the adversities and social incomprehension that he is faced with on a daily basis”, considers the Algarve academy.

“With a long list of publications and projects, it has developed a revolutionary computer system, Easy Voice, which allows people with speech impairments to make telephone calls using an artificial voice generated by a computer”, concludes UAlg.
